A STEEL CHALLENGE match is really very simple! You will need to draw your pistol and shoot five steel plates as fast as you can ... a timer will beep and tell you when to draw and start shooting ... the plates will be of different sizes and shapes and one plate will be designated as a STOP PLATE (you'll need to shoot it last). The timer runs until you have shot all five plates or the stop plate. You'll do this five times (five strings) and your longest string time will be discarded. There will be five configurations of plates (stages) which you will shoot so this means you'll shoot five stages and five strings per stage (a total of 125 rounds if you don't miss).
It's a lot of fun!

A Typical Stage Layout

A typical STEEL CHALLENGE stage is shown in the diagram above.  As the shooter, you will stand in the box (shown above the word "PENDULUM") and when instructed by the Range Officer you will "load and make ready". Once you are ready to shoot you will indicate to the Range Officer that you are in fact ready, and the Range Officer will signal for you to draw your pistol and shoot the five plates (shooting the stop plate, the one with the red post last) as fast as you can.  Your time will be recorded by the timer and you'll repeat this five times with your highest (longest) time discarded.

There will typically be five stages to be shot in the course of fire.
